Save Water and Have a Great Looking Lawn
A great looking lawn won’t happen on its own but it is also very achievable with a little work and a good plan. You can have that great lawn and also save water with these 3 helpful tips:
1. Don’t Cut it Too Short
Cutting too much off your grass can be detrimental to your lawn. Taller grass will also help to cast a shadow onto the dirt that will help prevent water from evaporating too quickly. Taller grass looks healthier and will help to hide stressed areas and ultimately make your lawn look better.
2. Mulch Grass Clippings
Bagging your grass clippings seems like the right thing to do, but mulching those clippings is way more beneficial. Allowing them to settle back down into your lawn will create a sort of cover that helps to keep moisture in and harmful sunlight out. This will help to create a much thicker lawn which will also help to cut down on weeds. Most new lawn mowers allow for easy mulching with either a setting for it, or a removable bag that will let the clippings spray out the side as you cut.
Using a specially designed mulching blade for your mower will also help. It basically cuts the blades a second time to create a smaller mulch that will find its way down into your lawn a lot easier. There is a big difference in the clippings with a regular blade versus a mulching blade and also results in less cleanup as most of the clippings end up nestled into your lawn.
3. Water at Night
…or first thing in the morning. By watering at night or early in the morning, you are allowing more water to saturate the soil, down to the roots of the lawn and plants than if you were to water during the day. Watering during the day when the sun is out and the heat is much higher only allows more of your water to evaporate. Check the time on your controller for each section, add them all up and pick an early enough starting time to allow the water to get down into the soil before the sun gets to beat down on it.
There are a lot of ways to get that great looking lawn and save water. Start with these 3 and enjoy that lush green lawn all season long.
